Many people don’t really understand what human resources is. Many hold misconceptions on the concept. In fact, it could be the department of any large corporation that is the most misunderstood. Even funnier, it could also be the most important. The human resources department of a business is responsible for all firing and hiring of company employees, verifying job references for new hires, and administering benefits to employees. People who like working in the field of human resources are generally considered to be people people in that they enjoy and are good at interacting with other human beings on a social level. It is very important for people in this line of work to stay pleasant.

All of this might sound fairly easy, but it isn’t. Human resources administrators have to manage people, but don’t get anywhere near the respect afforded to those with managerial titles. It is a given that people in the HR department will have to deal with many angry people. After all, this is the department that takes care of two things that no one else in the company has any desire to do and that they will actually avoid. Those two things are, of course, firing employees and talking to employees about violations to the company’s dress code or other rules. Embarrassing problems pop up in the normal course of doing business, and the human resources department must take care of these situations. These are things like employees who smell bad. No one wants to tell a co-worker that he or she continually comes to work smelling overwhelmingly bad, but someone must, or the problem will persist and people won’t be able to get as much work done because they are trying to cope with the pungent odor. This is but one problem that the human resources department must face. Working in HR is never dull. Every day, there is a new challenge to be met.

A career in human resources can be both interesting and rewarding. The skills honed in this line of work are invaluable for anyone interested in excelling at business. If one can manage people and confront them about the most embarrassing issues imaginable, they can run a successful business and woo clients.

The individuals who work in human resources guard this information in databases, ensuring confidentiality for employees who trust their employers with their personal information.

Human resources will also handle employee benefits. Many employees who sign on to work at large companies will receive medical and dental benefits. To take advantage of those benefits, employees usually go through human resources, filing all the necessary forms and applications to ensure immediate payment or reimbursement for medical or dental procedures. If the company works in retail, employees may also receive discounts for purchases made, and to receive those discounts, employees will visit human resources for the appropriate discount cards.

Individuals working in human resources work closely with employees to ensure positive employee relations within the company. This can mean monitoring employee progress, determining methods for improving employee morale during work days, and encouraging communication between employees and the companies they work for. Employee relations is important, particularly in large companies where managers cannot always meet all of their employees individually. For this reason, the professionals who work in human resources make the perfect impartial third parties for handling employee and industrial relations.
