Everyone gets cravings for food both sweet and salty; however, people with diabetes have to watch food consumption. With many recipes for breakfast, lunch or dinner to choose from, people who live with diabetes can enjoy several different types of cuisine. Using foods to control blood sugar can be a difficult thing, but learning how to incorporate substitutions into recipes can help.

Breakfast

Fruit is a wonderful breakfast food; it is healthy and delicious. For a simple breakfast, try a fruit salad with vanilla yogurt and granola. Simply pick your favorite fruit, add a cup of vanilla, plain or even a flavored yogurt and sprinkle a little granola on top. For a breakfast that is a little more filling, try a breakfast porridge using prunes, raisins, honey, wheat germ, wheat bran and flax seed.

Meals are difficult for anyone to make with busy schedules. These preperations can be easy when knowing all the options for those with diabetes.

Lunch and dinner

When its time for lunch there are multiple options from salads to burgers. Try making a salad and add your favorite fruit. Try a veggie burger with a wheat bun or bread. Use beans to make soups; there are so many different types of beans all with different flavors. Adding vegetables and spices are great ways to use foods also low in sugar and great for flavoring. All of these options are great for dinner, and the leftovers can be heated up for lunch the next day.

Food exchanges

Recipes are great to use, but when lacking any single ingredient, the whole recipe could go array. Food exchanges are a useful tool and are divided into groups. These groups include the following: starches, vegetables. fruits, very lean meats and carbs. These foods are grouped based on calories and nutrient content. They are also based on fat content; cheese for example is grouped with meats because of the protein and fat content. It can be confusing at first but easy to get use to with practice.

Foods that alter blood sugar too much in diabetics can be dangerous. However, with the knowledge of foods and recipes as well as substitutions, these recipes can work well with any family. Breakfast, lunch and dinner can all be very well prepared.
