Best Lawn Care Tips

Keeping your lawn looking attractive is not nearly as difficult as you think. By following a few, simple tips, you can keep your yard in good condition all year long.

Mow at the proper height

A key factor in maintaining a healthy lawn is mowing it at the correct height. Maintain grass blades at a height of three to four inches tall. Allowing grass to grow any taller results in the root system and base of the blades not receiving the correct amount of sunlight for long-term health. Likewise, removing more than one third of the grass blades when mowing leads to plant shock and wilting.

Provide the proper amount of water

Your lawn has different water requirements during the year. Cooler months lead to a slowdown in grass growth, resulting in a need for less water. By overwatering your lawn, you contribute to fungus growth that can destroy your turf. Too much water also stimulates weed growth, and washes out the minerals in the soil. During periods of growth in warmer months, your lawn often needs watering two or three times a week. Depriving your lawn of adequate moisture results in dead patches, wilting and burned areas.

When watering your lawn, provide enough water to soak the soil without forming puddles.

Seek professional advice

There are some problems, such as destructive bugs, fungus or disease, that are sometimes difficult to solve on your own. Before these conditions escalate, call a local professional to deal with the situation. A landscaping firm often eliminates these conditions in one or two service calls. The cost of hiring a professional is much less than the cost of replacing your lawn.

Your lawn requires proper care just like any other plant. Follow these tips, and keep your lawn looking attractive during every season of the year.
