Function

Good air circulation makes hot areas more tolerable, and an open-weave fabric such as Coolaroo gives protection from UV rays and allows air flow, lowering the temperature under the umbrella by 32 percent. Sunbrella, SolarVista and Olefin are all sunlight-resistant fabrics. Sunbrella needs a water repellant applied to it annually, but it does have good UV protection.

Stands

Usage determines what type of stand to use. Stands are made with several materials, such as resin, fiberglass, aluminum or concrete. A portable stand that is easy to move is needed for a moveable umbrella. An umbrella that is inserted through a hole in a table needs only a lightweight stand. Some stands allow the user to attach the umbrella to a deck or other area. This type of stand is especially good for windy areas.
