Coping With Depression

Coping with Depression

Coping with depression is challenging and frightening. Whether it affects you or a loved one, managing depression usually requires the help of an entire family or support group. This guide aims to provide information regarding depression and treatment options to give you or a loved one the help that is needed.

What is depression?

One definition of depression is: "An illness that involves the body, mood and thoughts, that affects the way a person eats and sleeps, the way one feels about oneself, and the way one thinks about things" This is a simple definition. When applied, it is easy to think that depression affects everyone at one point in time, and that is true. Depression varies in its length and severity. When someone ends a relationship or loses a close family member, any individual may experience a spell of depression that lasts a few months. However, some people experience more long-term depression called clinical depression. For these people, there is typically no catalyst. They simply feel depressed on a regular basis. Without treatment, the condition worsens.

If you feel inexplicably depressed for a long period of time, let someone know and seek help right away. It is okay to ask for help.

Types of treatments available for depression

There are several forms of treatment available. Psychiatrists are one line of treatment. These are doctors who are trained to understand illnesses of the mind like depression ,and they can also prescribe medication. Many of the clinically depressed manage their illness with the help of medication. Psychologists or counselors offer another form of treatment. These are people who have trained to understand illnesses of the mind but cannot write prescriptions. A psychologist or counselor may hold individual or group therapy sessions for patients. Support groups are another method of treatment for depression. Most support groups are based on a situation. An example of one is a grief support group. This group is for those who have suffered a loss to gather and discuss their feelings.Support groups are a good solution for those not suffering from long-term or clinical depression

Seeking some form of treatment, especially for those who are depressed for long periods of time, is the best way to avoid coping with depression for a lifetime. Remaining silent about your depression only means you cannot receive help.
