Get Rid of Mold with Household Tricks

interiors of a neglected house in really bad condition filled with mold and devastation

If you've found that you and your family are sniffing and sneezing due to mold in your home, you're not alone. Millions are allergic to the musty bacteria and build-up known as mold. Even if you do not have a physical reaction to the mold in your home, its presence is never welcome. Here are some tried and proven methods to get rid of mold in your home.

Start cleaning your bathroom with vinegar instead of bleach. Vinegar kills just as many forms of bacteria as bleach does without harmful side effects.

Begin getting rid of mold in your bathroom before any other area of your house. This room is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria due to the combination of heat, moisture, and general lack of circulating air. Vinegar is not only edible (and therefore safer to keep around the house than bleach), but it is also gentler than bleach, allowing you to clean for a longer period of time without burning your eyes, nose, and mouth with the fumes.

Mop your floor with vinegar instead of antibacterial solution and save yourself time and money. Pour vinegar into a spray bottle and spray the solution onto and into all areas most prone to mold and mildew, especially along the seams of the floor, between tiles, and around sinks and faucets.

Keep your carpet clean and free of moisture, as it is one of the lesser known but easiest places for mold to grow in your home.

Because carpet holds onto trapped moisture for much longer than any other surface in your home, it serves as another ideal environment for mold spores of many types. Moisture from the air, from spills, and from human contact are all saturated by carpet fibers. This moisture then seeps deep below the upper surface and becomes trapped between the carpet and the floorboards beneath. If you do not wish to rip up your carpet and replace it with hardwood, you do have another option. Sprinkle baking soda directly onto your carpet and allow it to settle in for at least two to three hours. Rub in with a carpet brush before vacuuming thoroughly.

If your mold problem persists after these treatments, it may be necessary to call in a professional for help. An expert will be able to measure the amount of mold present in your home and determine the best method of removal.
