While everyone loves the fresh, clean look of a newly painted wall or room, the same cannot be said of the noxious smell of paint that is left behind after. Follow these simple tips the next time you prepare to paint in your home to avoid enduring the odor of paint and chemicals that seem to last forever.

Before you begin, look for odor-free paint at your local hardware store. If this is not available, alter the scent of the paint you purchase.

Many hardware stores stock odor-free or low-odor paints now, due to the huge demand for such products. If you are not able to find an odor-free paint that suits your needs, simple improve the odor of the paint that you choose. Before beginning to apply paint, pour two teaspoons of pure vanilla extract into each gallon of paint. It will not take much of this extract to deodorize the paint and the color should not effect the tint of your paint. If you prefer, you can use peppermint oil instead. Experiment with different amounts if you prefer a stronger scent.

Deodorize your room after painting with natural materials that absorb the chemical fumes found in most paints.

You can also effectively burn off the excess paint fumes in a room with a candle situated directly in the middle of the room. Of course, it is of critical importance that this technique be utilized carefully and under supervision, as paint is highly flammable. Three hours of burning is sufficient for an average-sized room; any longer may be dangerous and is done at a possible risk to property and human safety.
