Granite Kitchen Countertops

Granite kitchen countertops are an extremely durable and versatile solution for counters. One of the hardest stones, granite resists stains and is hard to scratch and chip. Granite counters bring a natural elegance to the kitchen. They are so resilient that they are going to outlast the rest of the kitchen.

Design

Granite comes in many colors and patterns. This variety and the beautiful visual appeal of granite counter-tops are the reasons granite is so popular. Optional granite kitchen sinks are available to match the countertops. When shopping for granite, check out several sources. Each slab of granite is unique, and that perfect shade or combination of colors might show up at the next vendor.

Installation

Installation by a professional is recommended for proper placing and measuring of the stone. A quick view of what a professional does in the installation process follows: Granite counter-tops are extremely heavy. The first thing to do before installation is to make sure the cabinets are sturdy enough to support the weight. Strengthen cabinets if needed, or purchase cabinets capable of supporting the weight. Once cabinets are installed, double check that they are level. Sometimes old floors are not even, and this can cause the cabinets to wobble. Measure the top of the cabinets for plywood; plywood should not overhang the outside of the cabinets. Place the plywood and attach with screws, making sure the screws enter the frame underneath. Once the cabinets are ready, placing the granite is pretty simple. After the measurements are double-checked to ensure a good fit, set the large slabs on top of the cabinets. Next, join the seams and glue the granite down. Finally, glue the seams.

Cleaning

To make granite last and to keep it looking well, it is important to realize that there are a few things that can damage the granite during cleaning. Acidic substances, such as vinegar and lemon, can pit and erode the surface. Chemical cleaners that ruin the polish and leave a film are glass cleaners, degreasers and household bleach cleaners. Granite is not tile; do not use grout or bathroom cleaners. Dishwashing detergent or soaps, isopropyl alcohol and any cleaner with a neutral pH can clean the granite surface effectively. Special granite cleaners are available, or use dish soap and warm water. Wipe up spills quickly, and encourage people to use coasters and hot pads. To avoid making small scratches, use a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge.

Granite kitchen countertops can raise the value of any home. They are more expensive, but, if the length of time that they last is taken into account, they are actually less expensive. Make a home unique with countertops that require less maintenance and last longer, granite kitchen countertops.
