In a society that is becoming more city-centric every day, escaping the hustle and bustle of city life by backpacking is something many do to get back to nature and to go exploring. No matter where you live, there are likely trails within a short drive to experience.
Deciding where to go is one of the most fun aspects of backpacking. Research your local area by perusing hiking books, websites and message boards as well as speaking with any hikers you know. For your first backpacking trip, you likely should keep to a day hike.
Ensure you are in hiking shape by walking or running at least 4-5 times a week. For your first hike, it is a good idea to walk with a backpack for the several days prior to the hike. Select a hike that is hilly or flat to the standard that fits your current physical fitness. As you commence your first backpacking trip, start slow as your body adjusts to a new physical activity.
Select items to include in your backpack. If you are going to be hiking for several days, items such as tents or sleeping bags appropriate for the expected temperatures and cooking materials such as a portable stove will be necessary. Otherwise, leave those items behind and bring food items such as trail mix, energy bars and fruit. A water purifier is also recommended, as you should never drink water found along the trail without using one.
Bring a topographical map of the area that you will be backpacking, preferably waterproof in case you hit a rainstorm. A compass or GPS will assist in locating where you are. Rain gear and extra dry clothing should also be brought in case of rain. Take sunblock to guard your skin against the sun. A first-aid kit should always be brought. To be safe, prepare for an overnight hike even if one is not intended.
