How to Become a Home-Based Travel Agent

If you want to start a business from home, and work full or part-time, you may find the travel business to be the perfect fit. You can become a travel agent at home and start your business very quickly. The start-up cost can be very low. Some travel agents have reported starting their home businesses for less than five hundred dollars.

To keep start-up costs to a minimum, your home computer can double as your business computer.
Earnings can become substantial in the travel business, there are lots of great benefits, and you'll be in business for yourself. Here's how one good way to do it.

The simplest and quickest way to start your travel agency at home is to affiliate with a "host" agency. Host agencies are full service travel agencies themselves, which allow independent travel agents to work through them for the sale of travel. These agencies provide independent travel agents with a variety of important services, including ticket booking, commission-sharing, and website development. Independent agents book tickets directly through their hosting agency's software, and this can greatly improve the quality of customer service provided by the agent. Some hosting agencies also provide their agents with a proprietary website that operates under the independent agent's business name, but is developed by, hosted by, and supported by the hosting agency. Customers of the independent agent can buy their travel directly through these websites, with booking being handled by the agencyƍs software and the independent agent earning his or her commission. Some hosting agencies also provide sales support to independent agents, with marketing and advertising programs, and lead generation systems.

Commissions earned by an independent agent from a hosting agency generally range from sixty percent to as much as even one hundred percent. Hosting agencies normally charge a fee to independent agents, and this can be up to several hundred dollars. Use of a hosting agency will not be required for a new travel agent, but without it, start-up costs will increase and business growth will slow. There are a lot of hosting agencies in the market, and with a quick Internet search, one can find a list of agencies to refer to and contact.

For new travel agents who have little or no experience in the travel business, education and training are worthwhile. There are many travel agent training programs available, and most hosting agencies provide training as a part of their agent packages. New travel agents are encouraged to investigate training opportunities, and take advantage of them as they become available. Customers expect a travel agent to be knowledgeable about travel, and an agent who makes an effort to gain that knowledge will likely earn more.
