Spring cleaning can often leave you with more of a mess than you started with. You have all this "stuff" that you want to hold on to, but no real space to store it without filling the garage. Here are a few simple tips to build your own storage rack.
First, you need to decide where your new storage rack is going in your home. Measure the area. This ensures that you cut your materials to the correct length prior to the install. The last thing you want to do is build a brand new storage rack only to find yourself disappointed that it does not actually fit into its intended space. Go ahead and make a rough drawing of the final product and its dimensions to reference throughout your project.
You need the following as the materials you are going to build with: wood (2' x 6' or 2 x 4'), nails or screws, sandpaper, press board and "L" brackets. Optional items include laminate counter top, paint, pegboard and hooks. Tools required include a saw, hammer or drill, saw horse and a level.
Cut out the legs and shelf areas and measure them along the way to ensure a proper fit. Build the frame first. Mount a support between each leg using the "l" brackets for security. Add the shelving surface after the frame is complete. It is easier to work with and move around a frame then it is to try and hammer around a large surface area.
Once the shelf is built, you are ready to finish. Using your sandpaper, file off any jagged edges and swipe several times across the flat surfaces. Wipe the entire shelf system down with a damp washcloth to remove any saw dust. If you are going to paint, make sure you have a tarp or other cloth handy to keep from getting paint everywhere.
This is a basic guide to help you get started. You can add other features to your shelf system as you feel comfortable -- like a peg board backing for hanging tools. With a little patience, you can save yourself the costs of a pre-built storage rack and shelf system and have a custom addition to your home or garage.
