There are many ways you can donate to charities, most of which do not even involve the exchange of money. If you have some spare time or a few things laying around the house that you do not need, you can help a lot of people with a few very simple gestures.
Monetary donations are probably the most common. You can go online or ask local charities if they accept cash or check donations. If you donate, always ask for a receipt. Most donations are even tax deductible. Some charities offer sponsorship programs where you pledge to donate money every week, month or year. Common charities that include sponsorships are Christian Children's Fund, many "adopt a child" foundations, zoos and animal rescue organizations. Humans are not the only species in need of help.
If you do not have extra money, you can start saving household items to donate. Clothes that no longer fit, shoes you do not use anymore, backpacks and even kitchen supplies are all items you should donate. For someone that has nothing, even a shirt that has a little stain can help keep out the cold. Other items such as glasses and school supplies are often sent overseas to needy children, so check online if you cannot find anything locally. Many food banks and homeless shelters also accept food items, sometimes even if they have passed their expiration date, as long as they are still edible.
One of the best ways to help a charity is to donate your time. Share a skill, read to children, help clean a facility, pick up garbage or help plant a tree.
You can help other people, animals and even the environment, if you are just willing to invest a little bit of time and a lot of your heart.
