When looking for employment, one thing you are going to do frequently is fill out job applications. Most applications ask for basic information such as your address, telephone number and current hours of availability. Here are some tips to help make your application marathon a winner.

Prepare references before you start your job hunt

Most applications ask for references of people who have a high opinion of your work ethic and personality. Compile a list of at least three personal references and three professional references. Personal references are people such as friends and family. Professional references are bosses, teachers and volunteer managers. Ask these people if they are alright with your potential employers calling them before starting your job search. This polite gesture prepares them for the calls and let them know you respect their opinion of you.

Get your dates straight

Job applications ask for the start and end date of your schooling and previous positions. Prepare yourself for filling out applications by reviewing and memorizing those dates. If memorizing things is not your best quality, save this information in your cell phone or write it down. This way, you can easily access it while filling out applications.

Other helpful tips

When you head out to begin your rounds of completing applications, bring your identification cards and at least two black or blue pens with you. You should dress in clothes that are at least as professional as the position you are applying for. A collared shirt and an ironed pair of slacks or skirt make for an acceptable outfit to fill out applications at restaurants, retail stores and other customer facing businesses. To look the part when applying for an office position at a job placement agency, wear a business suit with dress shoes or heels.

Filling out a job application does not have to be an intimidating experience. Prepare yourself by having all the information you might need available in your phone or on paper. By dressing the part and speaking to hiring managers with respect, you are sure to impress any potential employer.
