How To Find Legal Aid

It is an unfortunate truth of modern society that sometime during a person's life they could have to find legal representation of some kind; thankfully, it is not difficult to get good help.

No worries, we can help.

The first step is figuring out what kind of help you need. There are dozens of law specialities out there, from personal injury to small business to environmental to criminal, each with their own arcane precedents and knowledge. Retaining a single good specialist is often worth half a dozen general lawyers. That is one of the advantages of dealing with a law firm versus a single independent lawyer: even if the law firm do not have a specialist for your particular need in house, they will have contacts with various specialists. The internet is a great help in finding lawyers, especially the specialists, so do not forget to look there first.

The internet is not only a great place to find lawyers, but it is also great to get a look at their abilities and case record!

Money is the root of something something

The next step is paying your new legal rep. Contrary to their image in popular media, most lawyers are not ambulance chasing, money grubbing dirtbags; however, they do need to eat! This is the disadvantage of dealing with a law firm versus an independent attorney; law firms have to spread the money out between specialists who might not have a case but still need a salary and their regular bread winning lawyers. In contrast, an independent only has himself and a few assistants to worry about. Even if you are poor, it does not mean you have to go without an attorney; some will take cases pro bono publico (from Latin: "For the public good"), and others will take a share of any cash settlements you win.

Do not forget that lawyers do more than just shout "Objection!" Retaining an attorney to look over a business contract, prenuptial agreement or will may seem silly, but shelling out a few hundred dollars now to make sure an agreement is tight may avoid years of future litigation and grief.
