
Most people who want to lose weight know that there are really just two ways to do it: eat less or exercise more. And preferably both! But that still leaves unanswered the question of how to actually make it happen. People with busy, stressful lives are not eager to torture themselves with starvation diets or Herculean exercise plans. Fortunately weight loss can be achieved, and all that is needed is the proper mindset, commitment, and a little bit of discipline.
The first step is to set appropriate goals. It might seem appealing to lose huge amounts quickly, such as 50 pounds in one month. It turns out, however, that people who make such quick reductions tend to gain it back. The better approach is to determine what weight and fitness level you want to be at for the rest of your life. Educate yourself about roughly what diet and amount of exercise are needed to maintain that weight. Take into consideration what life modifications you sincerely are willing to make. So if life for you would not be worth living without chocolate cake, make a plan that allows you to eat cake. Just do not expect to have washboard abs. It is better to plan to be borderline obese and make it happen than to have no plan and find yourself dangerously obese.
Next, just start following the diet and exercise plan of your future healthy self! This may not be the quickest way to lose weight, but it probably is the healthiest. Weight loss should not be about short term pain followed by a resumption of the bad habits that led you to be overweight in the first place. You are permanently changing your lifestyle.
It may be difficult to immediately adapt your long term diet. Then just move gradually towards your target.
After you have firmly established that habit, then you can work on reducing the quantity and increasing the quality of your snack foods. Continue to allow yourself indulgences such as cake, pizza or beer. Just reduce the frequency you eat them and the portion size. Incremental progress towards realistic long term lifestyle change is the best way to lose weight.
