Model airplanes are fun to create and even more fun to display and collect. People of all ages enjoy crafting their own model airplanes and have been doing so for decades. With a few easy-to-follow steps, you can make a beautiful model airplane.
When you choose a kit, you will have a choice of material options. One is a resin kit. Because resin tends to be a stronger material, it is most often used to build rare types of model airplanes. This type of kit generally includes fewer parts and so it may be the better choice for beginner model makers. The other common type of model kit is an injection-molded kit. These tend to be less expensive than resin kits and usually offer a more extensive range of models.
Rinse all of the pieces of your model in warm water mixed with a mild dish detergent. This will help to rinse away residue and debris left from molding and packing. Make sure all parts are allowed to dry. Use a bit of high-grit sandpaper to gently sand the top glossy layer from the part edges that will touch and be glued.
Start with the interior of the aircraft. Detailed areas (such as the cockpit) require more attention to precision and care. Trim and sand away any excess plastic pieces from all parts and use liquid cement or included craft glue to join the parts together at appropriate places. Assemble the fuselage of the airplane. This is the main body of any aircraft and serves as the foundation for the rest of the model. Be sure that the pieces are held together firmly while the glue bonds and dries. Any gaps between the pieces can be filled with model putty and then sanded smooth when the putty dries.
Attach the wings and wheel units to the aircraft's body at designated areas. Apply a base coat, desired paint colors, and detail colors to pieces such as propellers and wheels. An airbrush can be used for large areas and for the final lacquer coat.
