How to Make French Toast

French Toast 1

With any list of classic breakfasts, french toast is sure to make an appearance. French toast is a delicious breakfast that is very easy to make.

1. Gather Ingredients and Supplies

Lay out all the ingredients that you will need to assemble this dish. The basic recipe calls for eggs, milk and slices of bread.

To add extra flavor to the batter, you can also add vanilla, cinnamon or nutmeg to the basic french toast mix.
You will also need a shallow bowl or mixing container, a skillet or non-stick pan, and a spatula.

2. Make French Toast Batter

Crack the eggs into the shallow container to begin creating the french toast batter. For a basic french toast recipe that creates about 12 pieces, use about 4 medium- to large-sized eggs. Add about one-half to one cup of milk to the egg mixture and whisk together until smooth. Add any flavorings desired, including vanilla extract, cinnamon or nutmeg.

3. Gently Heat Pan

Place your skillet or non-stick pan on the burner and heat until a medium to high temperature is achieved.

If you place a small amount of butter on the pan and it sizzles, but does not burn, the temperature is correct.
If using a skillet, add a small amount of butter, oil or margarine to the pan to ensure that the french toast does not stick.

4. Dip the Bread and Cook

Dip the bread into the french toast batter one slice at a time, coating both sides of the bread. Place into the hot pan. Depending on the size of your pan, place two to four pieces of french toast in the pan; your french toast should fill the pan's area without touching adjacent pieces. Allow the french toast to cook for approximately 30 seconds to one minute, or until no uncooked egg batter is visible. Turn the french toast with the spatula and cook on the second side until completely done. Remove to a plate or serving platter.

5. Butter and Serve French Toast

Place a square of butter or margarine on each slice of french toast while the pieces are still hot. Place on serving plates and top with maple syrup, jam or powdered sugar.

For a gourmet presentation, use a dollop of real whipped cream and top with the fresh fruit of your choice.
