How To Recover A Chair

For those people, who may be wondering how they can recover their dining room chairs, this article may be of help. It is relatively easy to recover chairs. Although there are many different chairs, the process for recovering them is essentially the same.

Choosing The Material

The first thing people will need to do is find some material. There are many fabric stores that sell end pieces of rolls that will help people save money. It is crucial to note, however, that the material is upholstery material, or else it will not hold up to wear and tear of people sitting on it. Some upholstery shops may sell scraps of upholstery fabric, as well. The amount of fabric that people will need depends on how many chairs they want to recover and how large they are.

Typically, 3 and 1/2 yards of fabric will cover the seats and backs of four dining room chairs.

Removing The Old Covers

First, people will need to turn the chairs upside down and remove the seats by unscrewing them from the chairs. Next, they need to turn the chairs back up and remove the backs. The screws to the backs are often hidden under plugs that will need to be removed first. If people do not have a staple remover, they can use a flat-head screw driver to remove the old seat covers.

Cutting Out The New Covers

The old covers will serve as patterns for the new covers, but people will want to be sure that they mark the old ones where they were sewn together. Roll out the new fabric onto a flat surface, and, using the old covers as patterns, draw out the new covers with white chalk. Remember to mark where the fabric needs to be sewn together, as well. Now, people can cut out their new covers, staying just outside of the chalk lines.

Finishing The New Covers

Now, people simply need to line the marks up and sew the new covers together. People will want to be sure that the new covers are properly placed on the seats and backs before stapling them in place. They can start by securely stapling the cover to each of the four corners of the chair. With that done, they can then staple along the sides of the cover. The backs are done in much the same way as the seats. With the fabric secured onto the backs and seats, people can then screw the seats and backs back onto the chairs.
