How To Show Sheep

County fairs offer much fun for the entire family. From the exciting rides to the delicious foods to the judging of such things as crafts and animals, there is sure to be something to keep everybody entertained. For those people, who may be interested in showing their sheep at the fair, this article may be of some help.

First Things First

People need to get their sheep used to being handled before they can show them. They should handle the sheep every day for at least 30 minutes. They can easily accomplish this by grooming the sheep and walking them around their yard. Once the sheep are used to being handled, people can then look into showing them. They will want to find out what shows are being held and where they are being held.

A quick search online can help them find any local fairs or shows where they can show their sheep.

Entering Sheep In Shows

Once people locate a show, they must then fill out the required entry form. They will want to make sure that they fill these forms out well in advance of the show to avoid any problems later. In some cases, there may be a cost to enter the sheep. People will need to know what classes are available to enter sheep, and what class their sheep qualifies for. They will also need to know the breed, age, sex, and shape. Some shows may be for wool, and some may be for meat.

Transporting The Sheep To The Show

An essential consideration when showing sheep, is how to get the sheep to the show. The transportation should always be appropriate for transporting animals, and it should be properly registered, as well. Finally, the vehicle, used for transporting the sheep, needs to be weather-proofed to protect the animals inside.

The Day Of The Show

Before people leave for the show, they will want to gather together some necessary equipment such as food, food buckets, gallons of water, blankets, shovels, lead ropes, foot clippers and wool trimmers. They should also make sure they dress properly. The best way to dress, when showing sheep, is nice clothing that is not too casual but not too elegant either. People should follow all the rules while attending the show and showing the sheep. These instructions are often available along with the entry forms, and people can review them before the show.
