Laser Hair Removal

laser depilation and skincare treatment in spa and beauty studio

Laser hair removal is a medical hair removal procedure that uses an intense beam of light to remove unwanted hair. The laser beam passes through the skin and into the individual hair follicles, slowing future hair growth. Laser hair removal can provide you with beautifully smooth results that last much longer than those of shaving, waxing, or plucking.

Preparing for Your Appointment

Laser hair removal requires some preparation on your part. Perhaps most importantly, you should check the credentials of the person performing the procedure. He or she should have experience with laser hair removal. If anyone other than a doctor will perform the procedure, a doctor should still supervise and be on-site throughout your treatment. Inadequate medical supervision during laser hair removal can lead to burning, blistering, and even scarring of your skin.

Secondly, in the days leading up to your laser hair removal appointment, proper skin care can make the difference between uneven results and smooth, hair-free skin. You should avoid waxing or plucking in the weeks before your appointment. Self-tanning and sun-exposure should also be avoided so that the contrast between your hair color and skin color is more noticeable. On the day of your procedure, avoid makeup, lotions, and other skin creams. Your skin should be clean and bare for optimal results.

Finally, you should provide your practitioner with your medical history. Some medications and treatments may increase your photosensitivity, affecting how your skin reacts to the laser. Hormones, birth control, antibiotics, anti-depressants, and other medications or supplements should be listed, as well as any medical treatments you have had.

Post-Laser Hair Removal

After your treatment, you may experience slight redness, swelling, and even irritation. Cool compresses can ease minor discomfort. Aloe or unscented lotions will help keep your skin moisturized. Avoid slathering on highly scented lotions or skin preparations with added ingredients such as AHAs that could further irritate your skin. If you had dense or coarse hair, you may notice a slight crusting or scabbing of your skin. This is normal and should go away within a few days.

It is essential that you protect your skin from the sun until your skin returns to normal. Use a high quality sun block with a high SPF.

Results

Your results from your laser hair removal procedure can be hard to predict. Some may find significantly less regrowth after just one to two treatments, while others may need as many as four to six treatments for maximum results. Hair grows in cycles, so occasional maintenance treatments may be necessary as well.
