Low Carb Food List

Reducing your intake of carbohydrates results in weight loss, reduced blood glucose for diabetics and decreased blood pressure. However, effectively completing this diet involves knowledge of foods that contain carbohydrates and which foods you should eat.

Some simple steps

Learning and memorizing exactly which foods you can and cannot eat on a low carb diet is time consuming. However, following some simple ground rules helps you cut down the carbohydrates in your diet without a hassle. First of all, you should stop drinking beverages with high sugar concentrations, such as sodas or sweetened iced teas. Drinking these provides little nutrition without filling you up, so that you are more likely to gain empty calories. Second of all, you should increase the amount of vegetables you eat. Vegetables in general do not contain many carbohydrates. Thirdly, start eating more fat and protein - these replace carbohydrates. Finally, choose brown foods over white foods; an example of this is brown rice instead of white rice or wheat bread instead of white bread.

If you are having trouble following all these steps at a time, start with one and slowly add steps.

Foods low in carbohydrates

Although vegetables are generally lower in carbs than other foods, sprouts, greens, cabbages and mushrooms are especially good. Avoid carrots, peas, potatoes and corn. Fruits low in sugar are best for a low carb diet; try raspberries, blackberries and rhubarb, but avoid mangos, bananas, cherries and tangerines. Most meat products are acceptable, but you should make sure the meat is not breaded or covered in a high-carb sauce. Milk products generally contain a lot of carbohydrates, so you may want to make substitutions, such as soy milk for regular milk.

A diet low in carbohydrates is not hard to follow. Simple steps like reducing sugary drink consumption and raising vegetable consumption offer quick ways to reduce carbs. To have the best diet possible, you should research the levels of carbs present in the foods you eat.
