The sports of disc golf is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise as well. The sports is relatively simple to play and easy to pick up. With a few simple guidelines, anybody can easily pick up the game of disc golf.

The Right Equipment

There are specific discs that are designed for the sport of disc golf. These are generally heavier and smaller than a traditional Frisbee and there are several discs that are designed for different purposes. There are ones specifically made for putting as well as long distance drivers and discs that are designed particularly for right or left handed players. For someone starting out, a traditional Frisbee can be used, but for someone looking to improve their game or get more involved in the sport the right equipment is necessary.

As there will most likely be lost discs, writing an email address or phone number on the underside will help it get returned if lost in a water hazard or in the woods.

Throwing the Disc

There are several different throws that will give the user different results. The basic overhand throw is good for distance as well as putting. When in the rough of a tree-filled area, an over-the-head tomahawk-style throw may be best. If new to the sport, spend some time practicing before hitting the course. Friends and fellow players can also help to give advice and pointers. The disc throw takes much practice, so it is best to not be frustrated when the disc does not go where intended.

Scoring

The game of disc golf is scored in the same manner as traditional golf. Each basket or hole will have a particular par and the player is trying to get their disc in the basket in as few throws as possible. Each throw counts as one point. If a particular hole is a par four and the player gets their disc in the hole in three throws, their score would be one under par.

Many local parks have disc golf courses and the majority of these are free. For a great way to get outside and get some exercise, disc golf is a wonderful sport to try.
