Heinrich of Bavaria defeats the Lombard king Ardoin and has himself crowned king of Lombardy at Pavia, but Ardoin continues to make war on Heinrich.

China's third Song (Sung) dynasty emperor Zhen Zong (Chen Tsung) concludes a treaty with the Khitan tribe on his northern border, pledging peaceful coexistence through an exchange of sword documents that represents the forerunner of modern international peace treaties. The Chinese and Khitan have had several battles, neither side has won, and the Khitan now agree to give up their claim to an area that they have occupied south of the Great Wall on condition that the Chinese pay a modest annual tribute of about 100,000 ounces of silver and 200,000 rolls of silk.
