political events

The Treaty of Bautzen ends hostilities between the Holy Roman Emperor Heinrich II and Poland's Boleslav I. Heinrich gains Bohemia, Boleslaw retains Lusatia and Meissen as imperial fiefs, and after defeating the grand prince Jaroslav the Wise of Kiev in battle July 21 he places his son-in-law (and Jaroslav's brother) on the throne of Kiev, thereby extending his control from the western tributaries of the Elbe River to the eastern reaches of the Bug River.

The Berber caliph Ali ibn-Hammud at Córdoba is murdered by his palace slaves after a 2-year reign and is succeeded by his brother al-Qasim, who has been ruling Seville and will reign at Córdoba until 1021.

Byzantine forces defeat an army of Lombards and Normans at Cannae in a great victory that assures continued domination of southern Italy by the Greeks.

The new Bulgarian czar Ivan is killed while fighting the Byzantine emperor Basil II, who annexes the western part of Bulgaria and regains Macedonia (see 1014). Ivan was a nephew of the late czar Samuel; his death enables Basil to make Bulgaria a Byzantine province, and Basil extends his empire's borders to Lake Van in Armenia, whose independence he will soon extinguish (see 1021).
