Pope John XIX dies in November or December after an 8-year reign in which the Holy Roman Emperor Conrad II has controlled ecclesiastical affairs outside Rome. Public protest has forced him to withdraw his recognition of the patriarch of Constantinople, for which he was well paid, and he is succeeded by a cleric who will reign until 1045 as Benedict IX.
