The archbishop of Cologne Anno, 52, seizes the 11-year-old German king Heinrich IV in the coup d'état of Kaiserswerth, depriving the boy's mother, Agnes of Poitou, of her regency. She invested Otto II of Nordheim as duke of Bavaria last year but he helps the archbishop to kidnap Heinrich from his mother, who yields power to Anno, who is obliged to share the regency with Adalbert, archbishop of Hamburg-Bremen.
Disputes between Ottoman and Sudanese forces escalate into a massacre of Sudanese at Cairo as the Fatimid caliph al Mustansir looks on and looting begins and the caliph finds it impossible to pay Egypt's mercenaries (see 1058; civil war, 1067).
Marrakech is founded by the Almoravid sultan Yusuf ibn Tashufin, who starts a tent settlement on the West Tensift River, northwest of the High Atlas range.
