The Tuscan countess Matilda of Canossa dies at Bondeno in Romagna July 24 at age 69, having waged intermittent war with the late Holy Roman Emperor Heinrich IV until his death 9 years ago. She has made peace with his son Heinrich V and wills her nonfeudal possessions to him, even though she has already donated them to the papacy, and although she is buried near Mantua her remains will be reinterred in St. Peter's at Rome in 1634.

The Holy Roman Emperor Heinrich V appoints his Hohenstaufen nephew Conrad duke of Franconia. Now 22, Conrad is a younger brother of Friederich II, duke of Swabia.

Japanese samurai Tameyoshi Minamoto, 19, gains recognition by suppressing a riot against the imperial court by soldier priests at a monastery near Kyoto. In the next few years Minamoto will eliminate rivals and make himself head of the branch of his family that controls the Kanto region northwest of Edo (see 1156).
