England's Henry II removes Hugh de Lacy, 1st lord of Meath, from his position as procurator of Ireland, possibly because Meath has married a daughter of Connaught's king Roderic without royal permission (see 1177). Meath will soon regain his appointment but will be suspended in 1184.

Hungary's Béla IV goes to war with Venice in an effort to recover Dalmatia (see 1124), but although the bloody conflict will continue until 1188 and be renewed from 1190 to 1191, it will be only partially successful.

The Japanese samurai dictator Kiyomori Taira dies at Kyoto March 21 at age 62, having turned over all affairs of state to his son in order to devote his efforts to building a new army, but he leaves that project incomplete (see 1180). Tokimasa Hojo helps his son-in-law Yoritomo Minamoto establish a shōgunate (see 1183).

Pope Alexander III dies at Rome August 30 at age 76 (approximate) after a 22-year reign; Tuscany-born Ubaldo Cardinal Allucingoli is elected September 1 to succeed him and will reign until 1185 as Lucius III.
