Parliament exiles Hugh le Despenser and his son Hugh the Younger at the behest of Thomas, 2nd earl of Lancaster, who continues to dominate England in opposition to Edward II (see 1315). The Despensers have antagonized England's barons by acquiring vast wealth. Both are disinherited: Hugh the Elder goes abroad; Hugh the Younger remains at the Cinque Ports, engaging in piracy (see 1322).

Dante Alighieri dies at Ravenna September 14 at age 56 while attending Guido da Polenta. His treatise Concerning Vernacular Eloquence (De Vulgari Eloquentia), left unfinished, is a pioneer philological study of literary use of the Italian vernacular.
