political events

The Battle of Bosworth Field in Leicestershire August 22 ends the Wars of the Roses that have continued in England since 1460. Henry Tudor, 28, earl of Richmond, has landed at Milford Haven with French support after a sojourn abroad to escape the wrath of Richard III. John de Vere, 13th earl of Oxford, commands his right wing, and Henry's Welsh allies help him defeat the king, who falls in battle, as does John Howard, 1st duke of Norfolk and earl marshal of England. Sir John's son Thomas, 41, earl of Surrey, is wounded, captured, and imprisoned in the Tower of London, where he will remain for 3 years. Richard's crown is found hanging on a bush and passes to the earl, who is crowned at Westminster October 30 as Henry VII. Uniting the houses of York and Lancaster, he restores peace to the realm and will reign until 1509, inaugurating a 117-year Tudor dynasty. The earl of Oxford is restored to his title and estates and made chamberlain and admiral of England.

Bruges and Ghent capitulate to Maximilian of Austria in June and July after sieges (see 1482; 1488).

Hungary's Matthias Corvinus (Mátyás Corvin) expels the Holy Roman Emperor Friedrich III from Vienna; Friedrich becomes an imperial mendicant.

exploration, colonization

Christopher Columbus sends his brother Bartholomew to France and England in hopes that he may interest Charles VIII or Henry VII in outfitting an expedition to the Orient, but Bartholomew has no success (see 1484; 1486).

medicine

Venice standardizes its quarantine of 1403 at 40 days.

A "sweating sickness" cuts down the army of England's Henry VII and postpones the king's coronation. The mysterious malady closes down the University of Oxford for 6 weeks, spreads quickly to London, and within a week has killed thousands (see 1507).

literature

Poetry: Le Morte D'Arthur by the late Sir Thomas Malory is published by the English printer William Caxton (see 1471; Caxton, 1476). Malory's abridged compilation of French Arthurian romance, probably completed in London's Newgate Prison, comprises eight tales in 507 chapters arranged by Caxton in 21 books and includes such lines as "there syr launcelot toke the fayrest lady by the hand, and she was naked as a nedel" (see Tennyson, 1859).

art

Painting: Pietà Panchiatichi by Carlo Crivelli; Crucifixion by Perugino.

Communication

Erhard Ratdolt prints an edition of Johannes de Sacrobosco's astronomy book Tractatus de spheara ("a treatment of spheres"), the first printed book to use several differently colored inks on the same page. See also 1457 Communication; 1710 Communication.

The first decrees for the prohibition of books perceived as dangerous appear in Mainz (Germany). See also 1559 Communication.

Construction

De re aedificatoria ("on the art of building") by Leon Battista Alberti, on construction methods and architecture, is published. Written some 30 or 40 years earlier, it gives scientific rules that should be followed in construction, but also emphasizes the art of architecture. See also 1436 Communication.

Transportation

Leon Battista Alberti's De re aedificatoria contains the first printed description of a canal lock. See also 1458 Transportation.
