Game Description

A clone of the original game Turtles by Stern, you play the role of a mama turtle whose goal is to save your "kid turtles," who are stranded throughout the floors of a multi-level highrise. Traverse through mazes and advance through the various floors to emerge the winner.

Instead of bugs chasing you as in Turtles, cars attempt to run you over. There's no home for you to take the kid turtles home to every time you rescue one, and the turtle no longer drops bombs: he lays down blobs which resemble turds to take out his enemies.

Review: Overall

You might get a tremendous sense of deja vu when playing 600 by Konami. That's because it's a complete duplication of the original Turtles by Stern. You would think that if they went through the trouble to change gameplay from the original, the least they would do is work toward enhancing it. You get the sense, however, that the goal was more to make it a separate game than to enhance the original.

Probably the biggest alteration is that you no longer have to visit the home where your rescued turtles needed to be sent in the original. This, in my opinion, was the best aspect of gameplay in the original. It forced you to take your time and plan out which way you'd have to go in order to reach the house, instead of quickly running through uncovering all the boxes. This version makes up for it by making the enemies faster and making more of them.

I might have somewhat callously referred to the bombs of the original Turtles as turds in this game when I wrote my description. But considering the nature of what was done to the original classic and how it was shamelessly ripped off from Stern, the word might refer not only to the weapon du jour of your hero turtle but to the quality of the game as a whole.
