Director Marcin Ramocki's loosely-knit essay film 8 BIT interweaves diverse elements from such forms as music documentary and sociocultural critique to explore and evaluate the impact of video games on music and art. Subtopically, Ramocki investigates his theme against several backdrops, such as the demo fad of the 1980s, the "chiptune" trends of techno music, and the whole concept of programmers "redesigning" conventional video games to suit their own whims and tastes. The director also profiles a number of digital artists including Tom Moody, Joe McKay, Glomag, and Mary Flanagan. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
