The Arafura Sea lies to the north of Australia, just west of the Pacific Ocean. Directly to its east is Torres Strait, and its south is bordered by Australia's Gulf of Carpentaria. To the west is the Timor Sea, and bordering the north of the Arafura Sea is the Banda Sea and Papua New Guinea.

The Arafura sea is located is over the continental shelf between Australia and Indonesian New Guinea. It is a shallow, tropical sea known for producing cyclones.
