Palpation checks for uterine tone, cervical tone, follicles on ovaries and the presence of a conceptus in the uterine body.

High uterine tone and a tightly closed cervix, no large developing follicles are indicative of pregnancy especially if they persist 20 days post breeding. The veterinarian may or may not be able to determine the presence of a conceptus at the time of the pregnancy check depending on the time post ovualtion (size of the conceptus) and their experience and skill.

Fertilization in humans. The sperm and ovum unite through fertilization, creating a conceptus that (over the course of 8-9 days) will implant in the uterine wall, where it will reside over the course of 9 months.

In humans , implantation is the very early stage of pregnancy at which the conceptus adheres to the wall of the uterus. At this stage of prenataldevelopment, the conceptus is a blastocyst. It is by this adhesion that the foetus receives oxygen and nutrients from the mother to be able to grow.

In humans, implantation of a fertilized ovum is most likely to occur about 9 days after ovulation, ranging between 6 and 12 days.
