Six cuts are sufficient to make 27 smaller cubes, by trisecting the square cross section from each direction: upwards, backwards and sideways as it were. I doubt that the availability of a seventh cut could help.

Electrical wire sheathing should not project by more than one
inch into where the wire terminates into a specific device. An
example is a junction box or branch circuits terminating into a
distribution panel.
