From the Kalapuya word Wallamt, meaning Spillwater. In all likelihood, this was in reference to the Willamette Falls which the Willamette River spills over. It's a common refrain in Oregon that the word Willamette comes from a Native American word meaning "Land of Sickness and Death" but that's 100% false.
