The most important of Suriname's important people is His Excellency Dr. Ronald Runaldo Venetiaan [b. June 18, 1936]. He is the President of the Republic of Suriname. Before the presidential office, he was a respected mathematics professor and government official. He has the respect not only of his countrymen but also of his colleagues on international business, diplomatic and political levels.

Another important person is Ramdien Sardjoe [b. October 10, 1935]. He has been Vice President of Suriname since August 12, 2005. Suriname abolished the position of Prime Minister in 1988. The position of Vice President was created in 1987 to replace that position. As part of his responsibilities, the Vice President chairs the Council of Ministers.

Desiré Delano "Dési" Bouterse is Suriname's current leader since the president is considered Suriname's leader.

Specifically, Mr. Bouterse is the ninth (9th) and current president of the Republic of Suriname as the victor in elections held on July 19, 2010. His term began on August 12, 2010. He holds office for a term of five years, at the end of which he may choose to run again if he so chooses. According to Suriname's Constitution of 1987, the president operates as head of state, head of government and commander-in-chief.
