An example of online defamation would be what would happen if I were to copy out a defamatory statement by someone and put it in this answer. Of course, I would then be republishing it and would be as liable as the person who first published the defamation.

An equal sign within a circle is a the grant of a copyright license providing additional users the right to share, distribute and post only exact copies of the original work. Thus meaning no one can comp or alter the work whatsoever if republishing the image.

Storing images to your hard drive is legal unless the images themselves are illegal, like child porn, or the way the images ended up on the internet was illegal, like pirated copies. (The pirating issue depends on local laws.)

Reusing or republishing images from the internet is generally not legal, in most cases someone will have a copyright. For this you would either need to ensure that the image is in the public domain (freely usable by everyone) or get the permission of the copyright holder.
