Henry Lawson was inspired to write by his experiences growing up in the Australian Outback, witnessing the harsh realities of rural life and the struggles of the people living there. He was also influenced by his deep empathy for the underprivileged and a desire to shed light on social injustices. Additionally, Lawson's personal struggles with mental health and a sense of alienation fueled his creativity and passion for storytelling.

Summary of IN A DRY SEASON

· In the heat of summer, the narrator in this story takes a train ride to Bourke and introduces the reader to the Australian Railway town and its visitors: The bush larrikin, The shearer, The sundowner, The unemployed rouseabout, The jolly bushman and township itself.

· Railway town has been described as having little variations. The sense of predictability is also seen from the sentence "Death is about the only cheerful thing in the bush".

· The narrator states later that he doesn't want to get away from the railway line to see the country.

· Narrator describes a sundowner as mad and about to attack the train. In fact, he is going to kill a snake. The tone suggest that the narrator considers anyone who would have to kill a snake and choose to live in the bush as "mad".

· The story also describes about unemployed people in the town who starts cheerfully out and eventually find themselves stuck as on Arrival, they find the workplaces too far from the train station.

· Finally, the bush liar, who entertains the carriage of passengers with tales of boxing, is taken down "in about three minutes" by a "quiet looking bushman".
