It was originally called Sextilis, but it was renamed Augustus (after Augustus Caesar).

There are several. In the 'Romulus' Roman calendar, October, which had 31 days. In the Numa calendar, it could be Sextilis with 29 days, September, or October, depending on what source you believe and whether it was a civil or religious calendar. The Julian calendar was implimented by (gasp) Julius Caesar in 45BC; it also had Sextilis as its 8th month, which later became Augustus. It is also a roman calendar. Hope that helps
