Singeing the King of Spain's Beard happened in 1587-07.

Generally, the first process of fabric pretreatment is singeing, especially for the fabric of natural fiber, as cotton\flax etc., they all need singeing to wipe redundant fibers which are nonuniform on the fabric, this process will make the fabric looks more glossy, and make the grain line more clear. Singeing can benefit dyeing and printing, it can also cut the yarn end and confused yarn.

On the 19th April 1587 Sir Francis Drake entered the harbor of Cadiz on the Spanish coast and led a per-emptive strike on the Spanish fleet, destroying a number of ships (20-30) and their supplies, and causing the planned Spanish attack on England to be postponed for over a year. Drake referred to this successful attack as "Singeing the King of Spain's beard".
