The procedure of variolation was already in use in the Ottoman
Court in Istanbul, Lady Mary Montague brought the procedure to
England and an inoculation was performed on her son in March 1718
and was successful. A licence was granted to perform the procedure
on six prisoners in Newgate Jail and all survived. Later Jenner
vaccinated a small boy and he survived. It was believed that this
procedure was founded on the fundamental principals of right
conduct rather than on legalities.
Further to this he carried out experiments on human blood and
made great progress in clinical surgery and enjoyed substantial
success. His actions were defined by the high standards of honest
and honourable dealings in the methods used. As a result of his
work, he improved the health of countless millions of people.
History records this as being morally right.
