a·ba'sic (ə-bā'sĭk, -zĭk) or a·bat'ic (ə-băt'ĭk) adj.

Inability to walk.

  • a.–astasia — astasia–abasia.
  • a. atactica — abasia with uncertain movements, due to a defect of coordination.
  • choreic a. — abasia due to chorea of the limbs.
  • paralytic a. — abasia due to paralysis.
  • paroxysmal trepidant a. — abasia due to spastic stiffening of the limbs on attempting to stand. Called also spastic abasia.
  • spastic a. — see paroxysmal trepidant abasia (above).
  • trembling a., a. trepidans — abasia due to trembling of the limbs.

Abasia (from Greek: a-, without and basis, step) is the inability to walk due to impaired muscle coordination.

The term covers a spectrum of medical disorders such as:

  • choreic abasia: caused by chorea of the legs
  • paralytic abasia: caused by paralysis of the leg muscles
  • spastic abasia: caused by spastic stiffening of the leg muscles
  • trembling abasia: caused by trembling of the legs
