(ə-bōd') pronunciation
v.
A past tense and a past participle of abide.

n.
  1. A dwelling place; a home.
  2. The act of abiding; a sojourn.

[Middle English abod, home, from abiden, to wait. See abide.]

In the meaning 'a dwelling place', abode is falling into disuse except in two fixed expressions: (of) no fixed abode, used of someone without a permanent address, and right of abode, especially as applied to citizens of Hong Kong who sought the right to settle in Britain after 1997. It has not entirely gone from literature in its ordinary use
(The house, standing at the edge of a fair-sized tract of woodland and once, perhaps, the abode of gamekeepers—Kingsley Amis, 1974)
, and is common in the combination humble abode, preceded by a possessive such as my, used humorously or ironically
(I will be hosting a soiree at my humble abode on the night in question—weblog, 2004 [Old English (up to 1150)C])
