(1940s- ) ABS was one of many of the new breed of plastics that emerged in the post-Second World War period.

It is a strong material that can be injection moulded and blow moulded as well as thermoformed or vacuum formed from ABS sheets. It is able to be produced in a wide variety of colours and is often used in the production of the casings of a wide variety of household goods from hairdryers to vacuum cleaners, and from telephones to toys such as Lego. From the 1960s companies such as Kartell and Cassina produced many exciting design solutions for ABS furniture.
