acceptance

  (ăk-sĕp'təns) pronunciation
n.
  1. The act or process of accepting.
  2. The state of being accepted or acceptable.
  3. Favorable reception; approval.
  4. Belief in something; agreement.
  5. (Abbr. acpt.)
    1. A formal indication by a debtor of willingness to pay a time draft or bill of exchange.
    2. A written instrument so accepted.
  6. Law. Compliance by one party with the terms and conditions of another's offer so that a contract becomes legally binding between them.

1.in advertising, formal written approval typically issued by a seller of network radio and television commercial time to an advertiser agreeing to the terms of the purchase.

2.in consumer behavior theory, the degree to which a message is absorbed into an individual's consciousness, unchanged from what was intended by the sender. Acceptance can be blocked by strong contradictory opinions or bolstered by complementary opinions. For example, an individual with strong antismoking sentiments would not accept, recall, or retain quality of life claims made in a cigarette advertisement, or may recall a distorted version of those claims. For example, a phrase such as "strong flavor" may be recalled as "lethal." Conversely, an individual predisposed toward a political candidate may not recall specifics of the candidate's platform but will recall an effective speech that reaffirms the individual's choice. See also selective attention; selective reception.

Banking Dictionary: Acceptance

Promise to pay created when the drawee of a Time Draft stamps or writes the word "accepted" above his signature and a designated payment date. Once accepted, the draft is the equivalent of a promissory note; the drawee becomes the Acceptor and is obligated to pay the amount shown at maturity. Acceptances are Negotiable Instruments which means they can be sold to another holder before maturity.

1. Banking. A time draft honored by a bank, known as a Banker's Acceptance. It is used primarily in financing international trade, for example, an overseas manufacturer selling goods to an importer, although a domestic acceptance is not uncommon. See also Documentary Credit; Third Country Acceptance.

2. Finance. Trade acceptance that is issued by a finance company affiliated with a manufacturer, for example, General Motors Acceptance Corp. Or by an importer acting as agent for a manufacturer. It is often backed by a bank Letter of Credit.

The act of agreeing to accept an offer.
Example: Abel offers property for sale, Baker makes an offer to buy the property for a specified price. Upon Abel's acceptance a sales contract is complete.

Dental Dictionary: acceptance

n

The act of a person to whom something is offered or tendered by another, whereby he receives that which is offered with the intention of retaining it. A contract is not valid without the acceptance of an offer by the party to whom the offer is made, either expressly or by conduct.

Short-term credit instrument consisting of a written order that requires a buyer to pay a specified sum to the seller at a given date, signed by the buyer as a promise to honor the obligation. Acceptances are often used in export/import transactions: an exporter may require a buyer to sign and return an acceptance, which the exporter can then sell to the bank at a discount, thereby obtaining payment promptly. The buyer then has until the bill's maturity date to dispose of the goods and pay the promised sum (now owed to the bank). See also bill of exchange; promissory note.

Is accepting a proposition the same thing as believing it? Whilst there is no general distinction signalled by the words, philosophers have been led to distinguish acceptance from belief for various reasons. The lottery paradox may be approached by saying that whilst one accepts that an arbitrary ticket will not win, one cannot be said to believe that it will not, thereby avoiding the pitfall of having an inconsistent set of beliefs. In the philosophy of science a variety of anti- realist positions may counsel one to accept a scientific theory, for instance in order to predict and control nature, or in the spirit of open-minded conjecture, without going so far as to believe it. The central difficulty in such recommendations is defining exactly what one is supposed not to do; in other words, saying what is distinctive about belief as opposed to the supposedly lesser and legitimate acceptance. See constructive empiricism.

1. A phase of hypnosis during which the subject accepts the idea, judgement, or belief suggested.

2. A coping strategy used by athletes to deal with social and psychological stress, such as a serious sports injury or involuntary retirement from a sport. See also social death.

Law Encyclopedia: Acceptance
This entry contains information applicable to United States law only.

The taking and receiving of anything in good part as if it were a tacit agreement to a preceding act, which might have been defeated or avoided if such acceptance had not been made. The act of a person to whom a thing is offered or tendered by another, whereby he or she receives the thing with the intention of retaining it, such intention being evidenced by a sufficient act.

The exercise of power conferred by an offer by performance of some act.

When a person who is offered a gift by someone keeps the gift, this indicates his or her acceptance of it. In the law of sales, which governs business dealings between merchants, a buyer demonstrates his or her acceptance of goods that are not exactly what he or she had ordered from the seller by telling the seller that he or she will keep the goods even though they are not what was ordered; by failing to reject the goods; or by doing something to the goods inconsistent with the seller's ownership of them, such as selling the goods to customers of the buyer's store.

In the law of contracts, acceptance is one person's compliance with the terms of an offer made by another. Acceptance occurs in the law of insurance when an insurer agrees to receive a person's application for insurance and to issue a policy protecting the person against certain risks, such as fire or theft.

Acceptance also occurs when a bank pays a check written by a customer who has a checking account with that bank.

Types of Acceptance

An acceptance may be conditional, express, or implied.

Conditional Acceptance

A conditional acceptance, sometimes called a qualified acceptance, occurs when a person to whom an offer has been made tells the offeror that he or she is willing to agree to the offer provided that some changes are made in its terms or that some condition or event occurs. This type of acceptance operates as a counteroffer. A counteroffer must be accepted by the original offeror before a contract can be established between the parties.

Another type of conditional acceptance occurs when a drawee promises to pay a draft upon the happening of a condition, such as a shipment of goods reaching its destination on the date specified in the contract.

Express Acceptance

An express acceptance occurs when a person clearly and explicitly agrees to an offer or agrees to pay a draft that is presented for payment.

Implied Acceptance

An implied acceptance is one that is not directly stated but is demonstrated by any acts indicating a person's assent to the proposed bargain. An implied acceptance occurs when a shopper selects an item in a supermarket and pays the cashier for it. The shopper's conduct indicates that he or she has agreed to the supermarket owner's offer to sell the item for the price stated on it.

"For the ordinary man is passive. Within a narrow circle (home life, and perhaps the trade unions or local politics) he feels himself master of his fate, but against major events he is as helpless as against the elements. So far from endeavoring to influence the future, he simply lies down and lets things happen to him." - George Orwell

Acceptance was an alternative rock band from Seattle, Washington. They officially broke up in 2006.

History

The band has toured nationally and shared stages with the likes of The Juliana Theory, Finch, Further Seems Forever, and Seether as well as performing successfully on the Warped Tour and Cornerstone Festival. When the bands debut record, Lost For Words came out on Seattle indie, Rocketstar Records and quickly approached the 5000 sales mark, the industry at large began taking notice. When the band recorded a new 5-song demo with Aaron Sprinkle, this industry interest turned into serious courting by several major labels. After putting a professional management team in place to help determine the band's course of action, the band made the decision to release the Black Lines To Battlefields EP on The Militia Group who had been a long-time supporter of the band.

Acceptance later signed to Columbia Records and released their debut album Phantoms in 2005, again produced by Aaron Sprinkle. The album was one of many included in the Sony rootkit controversy due to its inclusion of the Extended Copy Protection software.

Acceptance broke up in the summer of 2006. Christian posted the following message on their site:

"You see, there comes a time in a band member’s life where he must choose between the abnormal life of a gypsy rock musician and the normal life of the common man. Jason, our beloved lead singer, has chosen the latter and decided to take on the yoke of the common man. HOWEVER, the rest of us do not share in this desire for normalcy and have decided to continue in our pursuit of rock stardom. You should all be expecting to hear a new kick ace rocking project from Nick, Kyle, and I, as well as a new project from Kaylan and a bunch of secret people that I can't talk about right now."[1]

At the time of the band's breakup, they had already written and demoed songs for a new album. As a "going away present" for fans, the band put the demo for "Not Afraid" up on their Myspace page for download.

Post Breakup

Kaylan Cloyd has joined Ryan Van Wieringen and Bobby Darling of Gatsbys American Dream to form Search/Rescue.

Christian McAlhaney currently plays guitar in Anberlin.

Nick Radovanovic, Christian McAlhaney, and Kyle Flynn started a band called Thunder Thunder with Jerrod Bettis. Their current status is unknown due to McAlhaney's commitment with Anberlin.

Jason Vena has retreated from the limelight, seemingly fulfilling his desire to lead a "normal" life. He's apparently currently working for his family's business in Mercer Island, Washington.
