A
lipid-lowering drug that is a
nicotinic acid derivative. It lowers both
triglycerides and
cholesterol and is therefore used in the treatment of a variety of
hyperlipidaemias. It acts by inhibiting the breakdown of fats in fatty tissue, thereby typically causing a 20% fall in plasma low-density lipoproteins-cholesterol (see
lipoproteins). It is available as capsules on
prescription only.
Side effects: vasodilatation, flushing, itching, and rashes may occur. Occasional side effects are heartburn, pain in the stomach region, nausea, headache, and diarrhoea.
Precautions: acipimox should not be taken by people with severely impaired kidney function or peptic ulcer or by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding because of a lack of data on its safety.
