Biography
Adam F built a stellar reputation in the hiphop world as a musician and a producer upon emerging in the late '90s. Many in the hiphop and rap communities believe he has the potential to become a master producer like Dr. Dre. By age 15, F was a fan of of early U.S. hiphop and British electronica acts. His melodic sensibilities were sharpened by his love of Lalo Schifrin, Quincy Jones, Bob James and jazz-fusion in general. F developed his skills as a keyboardist and, by the early '90s, he was studying the drum 'n bass foundations of hiphop, electronica and techno. He signed to EMI in the U.K. and his 1998 debut album Colours featured the top 20 hits "Circles," "Brand New Funk" and "Music in My Mind." Colours won a Music of Black Origin (MOBO) award in the U.K. as best album. After an 18-month tour with a live band, F proceeded to further trek the globe as a DJ for other artists like Goldie and Jumping Jack Frost. Some of his demos made their way to Def Jam Records, who passed them on to LL Cool J. The rapper immediately loved F's tapes, and he had Adam F. produce "The G.O.A.T." on 2000's G.O.A.T. Featuring James T. Smith: The Greatest of All Time, his first number one album in the U.S. Soon, F started working with the likes of Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott and Lady Luck. Re-focusing on his own career, he spent 18 months recording his 2001 album, KAOS, which includes his own version of "The G.O.A.T." and the anthem "Smash Sumthin'," featuring Redman. The recording of KAOS was also filmed for a documentary. Following that album, Adam F. teamed with Redman for a few sessions, putting his distinctive stamp on 2002's Malpractice. Early the next year, a drum and bass/hip hop fusion project saw the light of day, with Adam F.'s collaborations with LL Cool J, Guru, Redman, and many others remixed by artists like Roni Size and Dillinja. ~ Bret Adams, All Music Guide
His breakthrough hit was the techstep classic Metropolis/Mother Earth, released in 1997 on the Metalheadzrecord label. What is considered to be his greatest early work is his Drum & Bass/Jazz fusion "Circles", with its unique structure and build, and famous bassline. Even today it is still played by numerous DJs. In 1998, he won a MOBO award for his debut album Colours. In 2001, he found success in the field of hip hop, primarily with his ground breaking collaborative musical effort KAOS - The anti-acoustic warfare working along side L.L Cool J, Redman, Beenie man, De la soul and many more. In 2002, Adam scored the feature film, Ali G Indahouse starring Sacha Baron Cohen for Working Title Films.
He is founder and co-owner of the UK independent record label Breakbeat Kaos who released Pendulums platinum selling album "Hold your colour"and also co-owner of major drum and bass website Dogs on Acid. He has to his credit, 12 Top 40 UK singles, 8 Gold and 2 Platinum discs.
In early 2007, Adam was cast in his first film role, the British indie crime thriller The Heavy. In December 2007, Adam co-starred in new British feature film Cuckoo, a thriller about sound and lies co-starring Richard E. Grant and Laura Fraser, directed by Richard Bracewell. Cuckoo is currently in post-production.
2009-2010 It’s amazing to think it was back in 2001 when Adam F released his flawless ‘KAOS: The Anti-Acoustic Warfare’ album that converted him overnight from UK Drum’n‘Bass/Jungle pioneer into one of the most in-demand Hip Hop producers of his time. That album featured heavyweight vocals from the likes of LL Cool J, Beenie Man, M.O.P, Pharoahe Monch, Guru, De La Soul and Redman, who featured on the now classic ‘Smash Sumthin’ single that went top 5 in the UK charts and gained Adam global fame as one of the most exciting names in Hip Hop. Having stepped out of the limelight in recent years to focus on building his powerhouse Breakbeat Kaos label, which has enjoyed massive success with Pendulum’s platinum selling album ‘Hold Your Colour’, Adam is now back with the new move…
A key component in Adam’s return with Redman is long-term friend Nick Halkes (aka Horx), the man who launched both XL Recordings and Positiva, signing and most recently A&Ring The Prodigys million selling return to form ‘Invaders Must Die’, an album on which he enjoys a co-write on the title track and a project which has given him the opportunity to DJ in support of the band at multiple arena dates earlier this year.
It was Nick who originally signed Adam to Positiva and after a chance meeting at WMC in Miami this year he managed to re-install the passion and belief in Adam to get back in the studio and do what he does best. Feeling that Adam’s style of fusing different genres and creating big hybrid sounds could add something exciting to the current climate of dance music, they got in the studio with the main emphasis on having fun! After a number of really positive sessions together Adam decided to call Redman and press re-launch on one of the most celebrated partnerships in recent times.
When both Adam and Nick started out it was simply “the buzz” of making and releasing music that excited them and it’s this back-to-basics attitude that’s so important to this project. Off the back of their recent remix of The Prodigy’s ‘Take Me To The Hospital’ single, which received plays from Annie Mac and Rob Da Bank at Radio 1, Adam F & Horx now present ‘Shut The Lights Off’. Having united with Redman in Amsterdam to record the vocals the tone was set and with Redman fully on-board to record an album and take it on the road as a live act, it couldn’t be a more exciting prospect for next summer. In fact it was Redman (currently touring with Method Man for their latest Blackout 2 album) who said that in 2010 he wants to “get away from the big U.S arenas and get into some dark festival tents with lasers!”
With ‘Shut The Lights Off’ likely to cement itself into DJ’s boxes for many months to come and sounding like a huge festival anthem for 2010, Redman’s wish will undoubtedly come true. It’s the start of something very BIG for all involved and as a straight up party starting smash – it couldn’t be much bigger than this. Get ready people, Adam F and Redman are back – blow your horns!
