A mountain, 2,244.8 m (7,360 ft) high, in south-central Sri Lanka. It is a sacred place of pilgrimage for Buddhists, Hindus, and Muslims.


Mountain, southwestern Sri Lanka. Standing 7,360 ft (2,243 m) high, it is sacred and a place of pilgrimage to Buddhists, Muslims, and Hindus. On its summit, it has a large hollow, 5.3 ft (1.6 m) long, that is venerated as the footprint of Buddha, Adam, and Shiva, respectively. Many pilgrims of all faiths visit the peak every year.

Mountain in Sri Lanka sacred to many religious traditions. At the top there is a footprint that is variously said to belong to Adam, the Hindu god Śīva, the apostle Thomas, and the Buddha. In Pāli sources the mountain is known by various names, such as Samantakūṭa and Samantagiri, and it is said that the Buddha left his footprint there when he descended from the sky on his third visit to the island. The site has been a shrine and an important pilgrimage centre since ancient times.

This stone footprint is regarded as Buddha's by Buddhists, Shiva's by Hindus, and Adam's by Muslims, who believe this to be the site of Adam's fall from Paradise.
