Addison is a village located west of the Chicago Metropolitan Area, in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 35,914 at the 2000 census[1]. A 2003 recount gave the community a population of 36,378.

The Village of Addison lies on Salt Creek. The community itself was named after 18th century writer Joseph Addison.

The Addison Industrial District was the proposed location for the reconstruction of Comiskey Park before it was voted down.

Bobby Hull was an Addison resident during his Blackhawk playing days.

Adventureland amusement park was located in Addison during the 1960s and 1970s.

Larry Hartwig has been the Mayor of Addison since 1995. Other elected officials include Village Trustee and Deputy Mayor Rich Veenstra, Village Trustees Sylvia Layne, Harry Theodore, Tom Hundley, Bill Lynch, and Joe McDermott, and Village Clerk Lucille Zucchero.

Geography

Addison is located at 41°55′54″N, 88°0′8″W (41.931573, -88.002221)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 24.6 km² (9.5 mi²). 24.4 km² (9.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (0.53%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 35,914 people, 11,649 households, and 9,097 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,470.5/km² (3,807.6/mi²). There were 11,805 housing units at an average density of 483.3/km² (1,251.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 75.39% White, 2.51% African American, 0.35% Native American, 7.94% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 11.39% from other races, and 2.40% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 28.40% of the population.

There were 11,649 households out of which 38.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.7% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.9% were non-families. 16.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.07 and the average family size was 3.46.

In the village the population was spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 11.3% from 18 to 24, 32.0% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 8.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 103.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $54,090, and the median income for a family was $59,007. Males had a median income of $39,718 versus $27,815 for females. The per capita income for the village was $21,201. 9.6% of the population and 7.2% of families were below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.2% of those under the age of 18 and 7.3% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

Education

Addison is home to two major area high schools, Addison Trail High School and Driscoll Catholic High School, both of which include students from neighboring villages as members of the student body.
